Job Description:

The College of Arts and Sciences at the Petroleum Institute, Abu Dhabi, invites applications for a Faculty Position in Communication.

Position Description: The appointment will be at the Assistant/Associate Professor level.

Teaching responsibilities will include teaching first year Communication Skills courses and sophomore, junior and senior year support programs.

Communication Skills courses, on both the male and female campuses, aim to meet the objectives of producing well-rounded, autonomous life-long learners, who are able to use higher order thinking and communication skills, required by professionals in the twenty-first century.

Problem-solving and team-work are highlighted in project-based courses which focus on developing the ability to articulate, both orally and in writing, academic, scientific and technical observations, ideas and arguments.

Project planning and time management skills are developed, as students work in teams to gather and share information, leading to full written reports and multimedia oral research presentations.

A strong interest in interactive classroom teaching is essential.

The Faculty also participates in on-going syllabus, materials and assessment development and is expected to engage in institutional committee work, as well as scholarly activity.

Teaching at the Petroleum Institute involves an average of 10 to 15 contact hours per week, with classes generally limited to 20 students.

Qualifications: Applicants are required to have earned Ph.D.s (Applied Linguistics, Communication, Education or Humanities & Social Sciences) from a well-recognized university and have at least 3 years of full-time experience and achievement in teaching ESL students at the undergraduate level.

Candidates should be versatile team players, who have the ability to improve and enhance L2 communication skills in a context involving computer technology, collaborative learning and real-life projects, related to undergraduate study.

We are particularly interested in candidates who have the following experience:

· Experience teaching ESL students in higher education contexts

· Experience in Communication/Language Across the Disciplines

· Experience of and/or interest in outcomes-based programs, collaborative learning and problem-based/project-based learning

· Experience teaching relevant areas of English for Special Purposes (e.g., English for Science and Technology, English for Academic or Professional Purposes, Technical Writing and Communication,) plus knowledge of genre, discourse and rhetoric in writing

· Experience of Communication Center/Writing Center design, development and activities

Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, is a modern city, with a population of almost a million. Abu Dhabi has direct air links to most major cities in the world. Salary/Benefits: The total compensation package includes a tax-free, 12-month base salary and a benefits allowance which covers relocation, housing, initial furnishings, utilities, transportation (automobile purchase loan), health insurance, end-of-service benefit and annual leave travel.
