Faculty - Assistant Professor - 19th Century British Literature

Position Category: Faculty - Tenure Track (FT)


Utah Valley University's Department of English and Literature invites applications for a tenure-track position in 19th Century British Literature, to begin August 2018.

Responsibilities include: teaching advanced courses in 19th Century British literature, lower-division surveys of British literature after 1800, lower-division courses in literary theory, and first-year composition. Average class sizes of 20-25 students remains a departmental priority. Faculty teach a standard course load of four courses per semester, with reassigned time competitively awarded for scholarly research.

The English and Literature department offers BA and BS degrees in English and English Education. We offer emphases in Literary Studies, Creative Writing, and Writing Studies, as well as departmental Honors in English. Our 45 full-time faculty nurture intellectually engaged students and pursue scholarly interests through courses and programs including literature, rhetoric, technical communication, literary theory, creative writing, cinema studies, and an interdisciplinary BA/BS university degree in Integrated Studies. Faculty also participate in directing a summer London study abroad program, student publications, and a wide array of service opportunities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Areas of interest that would complement the work of our existing British literature faculty include the long nineteenth century (Romanticism and Victorianism), as well as contemporary literary and critical theory. Applicants with specialties in comparative colonialisms, science and technology, ecocriticism and/or environmental humanities, gender and sexuality, or material culture are especially encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will situate their teaching and scholarship with respect to UVUs emphasis on Engaged Learning. Ph.D. required at time of appointment.
