College of the Sequoias is seeking a candidate for a full-time tenure-track position in the Philosophy Department. This position will begin August 2019.

Job duties of the Philosophy Professor include:
Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):
- Teaching a full range of lower division courses including critical thinking, logic, introductory philosophy, ethics, and comparative religions.
- Teaching on a schedule that may include evening classes, weekend classes, and classes at any of our locations in Visalia, Hanford and/or Tulare.
- Holding office hours and participating fully in departmental responsibilities (course outlines, program and course assessment, program review, schedule planning and staffing, and advising students) to meet the mission of the District.
- Participation in the governance of the District through committee work, leadership positions, and cooperation with colleagues is also encouraged.
The candidate must meet the following criteria. The degree must be from an institution accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges or the equivalent.
- Master's degree in philosophy OR
- Bachelor's degree in philosophy AND Master's degree in humanities or religious studies, OR
- The equivalent AND
- Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, social, economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

In looking at application materials, the Hiring Committee also seeks evidence of the following:
- Successful instructional experience including but not limited to community college teaching of introductory philosophy, critical thinking and writing, symbolic logic, and normative and applied ethics.
- Enthusiasm for canonical figures such as Plato, Aquinas, Hume, and Descartes as well as an appreciation for a more diverse, expanded canon.
- Ability to effectively engage with and facilitate authentic learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. (Diversity response will be completed as part of the application).
- Success in helping under-prepared students meet the rigorous demands of a philosophy course, especially with respect to writing.
- Experience using a variety of teaching strategies and assessment methods that encourage retention while successfully challenging a diverse student population.
- Training and experience with student-centered teaching methodologies appropriate for dialogue and reflection in philosophy courses, including but not limited to active learning, collaborative learning, distance education, instructional technologies, and/or service learning.
- Active development of learning outcomes, incorporation of outcomes into courses, and use of outcomes assessment to improve teaching and student learning.
- Ongoing professional development in philosophy and teaching.
- Professional commitment to instructional activities (syllabi, course outlines, and program planning), committee work, student advising and activities, workshop presentations, and participatory governance.
