Overview
The Department of Communication at St. Edward's University is seeking a faculty member with excellent interpersonal skills and leadership experience at the department-chair level and above to serve as Department Chair and Professor or Associate Professor. Applicants with tenure at their current institution will be considered for appointment with tenure. Preferred start date July 1, 2018.

The department offers the BA degree in Communication. Communication is the largest major in the School of Arts and Humanities and is the third largest undergraduate major. The position includes academic and administrative leadership for a department of eight full-time faculty members with a terminal degree and two one-year, full-time, non-tenure track Instructors who serve approximately 240 communication majors. Faculty specialty areas include Rhetoric, Interpersonal, Public Relations, Advertising, Organizational, Performance Studies, Visual Communication, and Media Studies. Departmental faculty are actively engaged in research, interdisciplinary collaborations across the university and service. We also actively contribute to the university's mission to enhance its status as the top producer of U.S. Fulbright Students among master's granting institutions (2015-2016).

Responsibilities
The Department Chair is expected to provide leadership, work with the faculty to cultivate vision, and foster excellence in all departmental efforts. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: promoting the academic success of students; shared administration of undergraduate programs; recruitment, mentoring, and evaluation of faculty; management of budget and departmental resources; planning, assessment and reporting; and maintenance of accreditation for instructional programs. Duties will also include teaching courses at the introductory level as well as upper-division courses in one's area of specialization. The Chair teaches a 3-3 load, with the possibility of one course release per year for research, on a 3-year renewable contract. The salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with rank.

Qualifications
Ph.D. in Communication or Communication-related discipline with a demonstrated expertise in one's area of specialization is required. Also required are a demonstrated record of leadership experience, excellence and innovation in undergraduate teaching, a history of scholarly activities, the potential for engaging undergraduates in research, and significant contributions to service. Experience in grant writing a plus. Successful completion of an employment and/or criminal history background check is required.
