Company Description:

Founded in 1919, AUC moved to a new 270-acre state-of-the-art campus in New Cairo in 2008. The University also operates in its historic downtown facilities, offering cultural events, graduate classes, and continuing education. Student housing is available in New Cairo. Among the premier universities in the region, AUC is Middle States accredited; its Engineering programs are accredited by ABET, its Chemistry program is accredited by the Canadian Society for Chemistry, and the School of Business is accredited by AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS. The AUC Libraries contain the largest English-language research collection in the region and are an active and integral part of the University's pursuit of excellence in all academic and scholarly programs. AUC is an English-medium institution; eighty-five percent of the students are Egyptian and the rest include students from nearly ninety countries, principally from the Middle East, Africa and North America. Faculty salary and rank are based on qualifications and professional experience. According to AUC policies and procedures, all faculty are entitled to generous benefits.

Job Description:

The Department of English and Comparative Literature (ECLT) at the American University in Cairo seeks a full time appointment beginning Fall 2018. In order to meet the needs of this historically-oriented and regionally-specific curriculum, we seek a colleague who is not only able to teach courses traditionally represented in all literature programs, but who also understands the unique composition and mission of an English and Comparative Literature Department situated in Cairo, at the crossroads of East and West as well as the Global North and South. We are interested in faculty who are not only specialists in literary studies but who would be able to branch into neighboring disciplines and fields related to the department's mission and who would help us make a contribution to the broader mission of AUC. The successful candidate is expected to teach humanities courses in the AUC core curriculum, actively engage in research; supervise M.A. theses and serve on committees; and provide department and university service. The teaching load is normally nine credits per semester, including courses in the M.A. program.

Requirements:

Applicants must have a PhD in English, Comparative Literature, or a related discipline by the time of appointment, preferably with a record of an active research agenda and teaching experience.

Additional Information:

Review of applications will begin immediately. Deadline for applications is January 28, 2018.

Application Instructions:

All applicants must submit the following documents via the online system:

a) an updated C.V; (b) a letter of interest; (c) a completed AUC Personnel Information Form (PIF); (d) a list of professional publications; (e) a statement of teaching philosophy; and (f) copies of recent student evaluations.
