The Department of Linguistics at the University of North Texas seeks to fill a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, with a primary specialization in computational linguistics. We seek candidates who are active researchers in a core linguistics area that complements existing departmental strengths (low-resource language documentation and resource creation, second language acquisition, theoretical linguistics, computational discourse and semantics, CL for low-resource languages, and corpus-based research). In addition, the successful candidate will play an important role in the continued development of our graduate and undergraduate programs in computational linguistics. Evidence of an active research agenda, a promising trajectory for grant acquisition, and a strong commitment to innovative teaching is required for consideration. The expected start date could be either Spring 2019 or Fall 2019. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the search is closed.

The teaching load for tenure-track positions is typically four courses per year, graduate and undergraduate levels.

Additional responsibilities include service on departmental and university committees and student advising/supervision.

Minimum Qualifications:
A PhD in Linguistics, Computer Science, Cognitive Science or a related field with a strong background in computational linguistics / natural language processing is required.

Linguistics moved from the College of Arts and Sciences to the College of Information (COI) in fall 2014, and in fall 2016 it became the third department in the college. The move to COI has positioned Linguistics in a collaborative environment for developing cutting-edge curricula that incorporate research on language structure and use with database design and management, language technology, text mining, computational and quantitative methods in linguistics, and natural language processing. We seek candidates who will contribute to the existing creative and collaborative environment in the department, as well as pursuing interdisciplinary collaborations (both new and existing) with other computational research groups on campus, in particular in Computer Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Information Science.

Degree programs in the Department of Linguistics include a BA in Linguistics, an MA in Linguistics, an MA in ESL, an Interdisciplinary MS in Computational Linguistics, and Graduate Academic Certificates in TESOL and in Computational Linguistics. Students in the Information Science (IS) Ph.D. program may also opt to do a concentration in linguistics.
