POOL – Lecturer – Arabic
African/African Amer Studies
The Department of African & African-American Studies (AAAS) at the University of Kansas invites qualified scholars and professionals to submit online applications to the lecturer pool to be considered for part-time and/or full-time, temporary, lecturer positions. Positions vary and are dependent upon the need for instructors, if any, for courses being offered each semester. These are non-tenure-track members of the faculty whose primary role is instructional.
The lecturer position will be responsible for developing and/or teaching Arabic language courses.
Application materials will be reviewed by the faculty and placed in a pool for consideration for developing and/or teaching undergraduate courses in AAAS, consistent with departmental instructional needs.
The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins
Regular Lecturer Duties
100% – Regular Lecturer Duties:
Teach a specified number of either undergraduate or graduate courses per semester.
- Teach one to four 3-hour or 5-hour course(s) as assigned by the Chair of the Department.
- Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, the lecturer must make arrangements in consultation with the Department for a substitute to teach the class. Classes should not be cancelled.
- Provide instruction throughout the semester. Develop assignments, administer exams, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.
- Hold regular office hours for students that are enrolled in the classes taught.
- Lecturers may assume limited advising duties and attend in-service professional development meetings designed to improve teaching, as determined by the Chair of the Department.
- Adhere to Departmental, College, and University policies.
Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in C.V., and (3) information provided from professional references.
1. A minimum of a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in the respective language or languages, OR a Bachelor’s degree and two (2) or more years of distinguished teaching experience at the post-secondary level in the respective language or languages.
2. Demonstrated near-native or native language ability, and knowledge of the culture(s) where the respective language is spoken.
3. A consistent record of participation in professional development in the languages (e.g., workshops, certificate programs, etc.), plus a record of research and publication that, in the aggregate, substantially meets the equivalent training that would be equivalent to an M.A. or Ph.D. program designed for instructors in the languages.
4. An extensive record of professional experience as a practitioner of language.
1. A Doctorate in the respective language or languages.
2. Five (5) or more years of distinguished teaching experience in the languages at the post-secondary level.
3. Evidence of prior success in teaching at the post-secondary level (e.g., course evaluations or supervisor ratings).
4. Prior experience with online instructional technologies.
