Position Overview

The Department of French & Italian at the University of Kansas invites qualified scholars and professionals to submit applications to be considered for part-time to full-time teaching positions, as needed. Applications will be accepted throughout the year. Academic year and/or one semester lecturers may be needed to fill vacancies due to emergency situations or due to enrollment demands. Selected applicants must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins. Please visit the department website at http://frenchitalian.ku.edu/

Starting Date: August 18th for fall semester appointments; January 1st for spring semester appointments.

Length of Appointment: One semester or one academic year. Renewable based on satisfactory performance of duties and departmental needs.

Job Description

100% Teach one to four 3-hour or 5-hour courses at the 100-, 200-, 300-, or 400-level.

Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, the lecturer must make arrangements for a substitute to teach class. Classes should not be canceled.
Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.
Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. A minimum of two posted office hours each week is required. The lecturer should be available for reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.
Adhere to departmental, college and university policies.

Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in resume, (3) information provided from professional references, and (4) information provided in course evaluations when available.

Ability to teach Italian at the undergraduate level as demonstrated by the cover letter, resume, or teaching experience.

For those hired to teach at the 100- or 200-level:
M.A. in Italian, or related arts, or humanities discipline (or foreign equivalent) OR Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and two or more years of demonstrated excellence in teaching at the post-secondary level within an accredited institution, as evidenced by course evaluation, peer evaluation, and/or supervisor evaluation.
Near-native or native command of Italian.

For those hired to teach at the 300- or 400-level:
M.A. plus additional graduate study in Italian (or foreign equivalent).
Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the post-secondary level within an accredited institution as evidenced by course evaluation, peer evaluation, and/or supervisor evaluation.
Near-native or native command of Italian.

Preferred Qualifications

For those hired to teach 100- or 200-level course(s):
Previous experience teaching the course(s) of interest.
Demonstrated excellence in teaching as evidenced by course evaluations, peer evaluations, and/or supervisor evaluation.
Familiarity with the North American educational system.

For those hired to teach 300- or 400-level course(s):
Ph.D. or A.B.D.
Previous experience teaching the course(s) of interest.
Familiarity with the North American educational system.
