About the opportunity
The Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (FASS) at the University of Sydney is Australia’s oldest and most comprehensive faculty of its kind. As one of the leading liberal arts faculties in the world, it has an outstanding reputation for teaching and research in the humanities and social sciences.

The Department of Linguistics is part of the School of Literature, Art and Media, one of six schools in FASS. The School offers study at undergraduate, honours, postgraduate coursework and postgraduate research level.

Established in 1975, the Linguistics department has teaching and research strengths in field work, grammar-writing, syntactic theory, functional grammar, areal and historical linguistics, linguistic anthropology, analysis of media discourse, applied linguistics, corpus linguistics, and TESOL. It has affiliations with colleagues in a wide range of language programs, the Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures (PARADISEC) and numerous other departments and schools across the Faculty and the University. Members of the Department are active in a wide variety of cross-faculty research collaborations.

The department is currently in a new phase of revitalisation under the leadership of its current Chair, Professor Nick Enfield, with an increased capacity and international research profile through the recent recruitment of additional academic staff.

In this exciting lectureship opportunity you will:

  • make an essential contribution to the research strengths of the school, including regular publication in journals of high ranking and other quality outlets, and the pursuit of research grants
  • teach and develop curriculum for teaching grammar and morphosyntax, as well as a broader range of areas of linguistics (including a Master of Crosscultural and Applied Linguistics)
  • supervise research higher degree students
  • develop effective interdisciplinary collaborations within and beyond the University
  • contribute to academic administration.

About you

We are looking for a Lecturer in Linguistics who possesses:

  • a PhD in Linguistics
  • the ability to teach syntax and morphology at basic and advanced levels
  • experience with research in syntax and morphology, expertise in morphosyntactic theory and methods
  • evidence of experience working with language as a comprehensive system (e.g., by writing a grammar of a language)
  • a research orientation to language diversity, language typology, and language function
  • research focus on a non-European language or languages
  • the ability to articulate a feasible and ambitious 3-year research plan
  • the ability to teach widely across the linguistics curriculum, in undergraduate and postgraduate programs including a Master of Crosscultural and Applied Linguistics
  • evidence of a capacity for efficiency and responsibility in general academic administrative tasks
  • the ability to work in a collegial and effective manner with colleagues in Department, School, Faculty, and University
  • fluent written and spoken English
  • evidence of constructive and inclusive attitude toward diverse approaches within the discipline, and across disciplines.
