Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts at The New School invites applications for one full-time, one-year fixed-term appointment as a Visiting Assistant Professor of First Year Writing beginning in Fall 2017. We seek an individual with experience teaching writing or rhetoric or writing-intensive courses in a liberal arts context to carry a six-course teaching load (3/3). Eugene Lang College promotes active learning through small, innovative seminar discussion classes. The college’s First Year Writing Program extends this vision by offering workshop-based first-year writing courses on topics in the humanities and social sciences.

The successful candidate must have experience teaching writing-intensive courses at the undergraduate level and a demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary undergraduate education in the liberal arts.

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. (or ABD) or M.F.A. (Writing) required. A publication history (scholarly, non-fiction prose, fiction, poetry) and relevant teaching experience are also essential. Experience teaching writing in a workshop-based setting is strongly desired.

The New School is committed to actively recruiting a diverse pool of applicants. We encourage candidates to apply who are from groups underrepresented in US higher education.

Application: Review of applications will begin immediately and the position will remain open until filled. Interested candidates should send, via our online application system,, a letter of introduction, CV, two short (course calendar length) descriptions for writing-intensive first-year courses, evidence of teaching excellence in the form of two recent course evaluations, and the names and contact information of three references.

In addition to a dynamic and progressive work environment, The New School offers a competitive benefits package, including medical and dental insurance, retirement plans, flexible spending accounts and a tuition waiver. We encourage a healthy work/life balance and offer employee assistance services, health and well-being programs and over four weeks of vacation time per year.
