Salary: Appointment will be made on the Professor’s Salary Scale (106,516€ – 136,276€ per annum) at a point in line with current Government pay policy

Post summary

The School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies at Trinity College Dublin is looking to make an appointment to the Chair of French (1776), one of the oldest Chairs of French in the world. The post is tenable from 1 September 2017 and arises following the retirement of Professor J. Gratton. The post holder will be expected to have and maintain a distinctive international profile of research excellence in French Studies.

This post is of international standing with previous holders including eminent scholars who have provided national and international leadership in the discipline. In making this appointment, the College is reaffirming its commitment to the role of languages in the humanities, and to the central role of the humanities in realising the academic and societal goals of a 21st century university.

Professorship at Trinity College

Professors are senior members of Trinity College Dublin. Their role is to demonstrate a strong leadership capacity along with excellence in research, teaching and administration and to make significant contributions to the wider College community and the governance of the School.

The Professor of French will provide strong academic leadership within the Department of French. S/he will have a broad-ranging vision of the role of the discipline within a contemporary university setting, and will be committed to strengthening collaborative approaches to teaching, research and administration in the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies.

The Professor will play a prominent role in shaping the academic mission of the department and the School, working within the School to foster a stimulating, supportive working environment, and outside the School and beyond to promote the importance of languages. The Professor will make a distinctive contribution to the intellectual life of the College
