Assistant Director for Retreats

Job Summary:

The assistant director for retreats oversees the student retreat program in University Ministry (UM) at the University of San Francisco (USF). The assistant director for retreats creates short and long-term retreat opportunities both on and off-campus for students (undergraduate and graduate) to contemplate the transcendent dimension of human experience, grow in their faith, and learn tools for lifelong reflection and discernment. The retreat program is a key aspect of USF's Jesuit Catholic mission and therefore the assistant director for retreats will need to be well-versed in the tenets of Jesuit education and Ignatian spirituality. As a member of the University Ministry team, the assistant director collaborates with staff and faculty from throughout the university to develop a robust offering of retreat opportunities for students of all faiths and those without religious beliefs. As a member of the UM team, the assistant director for retreats is invited to partner on other UM programs including immersion trips, student liturgies, Solidarity in Action, etc. All members of the UM team are called upon to care for students, faculty and staff through a ministry of presence, spiritual and pastoral support.

Current retreat offerings include the New Student Retreat, Kairos, Spiritual Exercises, Women's Retreat, Mountain Meditation Retreat, L'Arche immersion, Monastic Retreat, The Art of Justice, and graduate student discussion groups. The assistant director will have flexibility to change and recreate the retreat program according to ongoing assessment of student needs and interests. The assistant director supervises a staff of two part-time resident ministers and student staff who support the retreat program.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Coordinate, plan and supervise the student retreat program.
Develop and oversee the implementation of a varied and dynamic retreat program that encourages and promotes the spiritual formation of undergraduate and graduate students at USF.
Develop new retreat and faith formation opportunities for students at the USF branch campuses (as feasible).
Recruit, mentor and supervise part-time resident ministers and student leaders who support the retreat program.
Oversee the marketing, advertising and promotion of retreats.
Keep and maintain budget records for retreats.
Reserve and coordinate use of retreat facilities.
2. Provide spiritual and pastoral support to the University of San Francisco student community.
Work collaboratively with Student Life and other related departments on campus to promote and support University Ministry goals university-wide.
Occasionally meet with students one-on-one to provide spiritual accompaniment and support.
Participate in ongoing reflection, discernment and professional development to respond as a University Ministry team to the evolving needs, challenges and opportunities in serving college students.

Minimum Requirements:

Masters Degree in theology or related field. Previous supervised pastoral experience in youth or university campus ministry. Excellent communication, organizational, and team-building skills. Demonstrated competence in spiritual direction, pastoral counseling, faith development, developmental psychology, spirituality, and Catholic social and moral teachings and spirituality. Knowledge of Ignatian spirituality, the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius and the tradition of Jesuit education. Ability to travel and available for evening/weekend work.
