Position Summary

The Editorial Team Leader of the Center for Language Education (CLE) supports the Director of the CLE and works as part of a team to establish an Editorial Unit within the CLE, on a bilingual (Mandarin Chinese and English) campus. H/she will work to support university faculty in all departments with manuscript preparation and submission to top-tier international academic journals.

The ideal candidate will be able to articulate a vision for the Editorial Unit within the CLE and its development, while supporting the internationalization goals of the wider university community. The position requires someone who has a well-trained critical eye and a deep understanding of their scientific field, in addition to other related fields. Duties include, but are not limited to: learning more about SUSTech scientists and their research, communication, budgeting, PR, while adhering to university policy.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Responsible for designing and executing activities intended to foster a spirit of community within the CLE Editorial Unit and University, as well as cultivating collaborative relationships with various University offices.
2. Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines; able to work in a busy environment and stay focused.
3. Able to comprehend and use the CLE business ethos in communicating with other individuals and departments.
4. Possesses a genuine commitment to service.
5. Strong organizational skills, initiative, creativity, high level of productivity, and flexibility.
6. Be an active collaborator across campus, and be an active and involved representative for the CLE and its Editorial Unit both on and off campus.
7. Assists the Director with hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating the Editorial Unit staff, through orientations, training initiatives, handbook development and revision, and ongoing in-service.
8. Liaises with editorial staff from a number of academic journals, both national and international, as well as members of the scientific community.

Minimum Job Requirements

A doctorate in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field. Clear and demonstrated understanding of at least one of these areas, with demonstrated research experience in one of these fields. A clear understanding of scientific research beyond one’s field of specialization. At least 3 years of experience as an editorial team member of an academic journal in one of the afore-mentioned fields, preferably in an international setting. Fluency in English (spoken and written) is essential, in addition to excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Bilingual candidates preferred (English plus Mandarin).

Conditions of Employment

Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis. Center for Language Education (CLE)

Established in February 2016, the CLE currently comprises 30 faculty and staff, offering courses in English and Mandarin as a Foreign Language. The Center is rapidly expanding and will soon offer courses in French, Spanish, German and Cantonese as a Foreign Language, in addition to an extended range of elective courses. The creation of an Editorial Unit is a natural progression for the CLE, in its efforts to support the university’s internationalization initiative.
