About the opportunity

The Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Sydney is internationally recognised for its excellence in research and teaching in all aspect of Greco-Roman antiquity ( It collaborates closely with members of the sister Departments of Archaeology and Philosophy whose expertise lies in the ancient world.

We invite your application for the position of Lecturer in Roman History (Level B) on a fixed-term basis, in the Department of Classics and Ancient History, to commence in July 2017. The area of research specialisation within Roman history is open, but the successful candidate will have a demonstrated capacity to publish high-quality research in their field of study. Applicants must be prepared to teach a full suite of units in Roman history. An interest in Hellenistic history is also desirable, as is the capacity to teach Latin at all levels. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in graduate teaching and supervision as appropriate.

The role reports to the Head of School, The School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry.

  • a PhD in Roman History or related field
  • expertise in Roman History
  • capacity to teach Roman History and Latin language at all levels
