Job:	Chairperson -- Social Science and Cultural Studies Pratt Institute Department of Social Science and Cultural Studies Date Posted: 10/15/09 Closing Date: 12/04/09 Title: Chairperson -- Social Science and Cultural Studies Department: Social Science and Cultural Studies School: Liberal Arts and Sciences [b]Position Summary: [/b] Reporting to the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Chairperson will assume academic and administrative leadership of the Department of Social Science and Cultural Studies. This 12 month per year administrative appointment which is available July 1, 2010, carries a three year contract which may be renewed. The Chairperson oversees the curriculum, Faculty and day-to-day operations of the Department; and contributes to teaching, research, course development and Institute-wide administration and planning. The Department offers a B.A. in Critical and Visual Studies, a core sequence in World History and electives in a full range of subjects covered by the Department, including: History, Cultural Studies, Philosophy, Sociology, Urban Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Anthropology and Economics. There are 13 full-time and 30 part-time members of the Department. There is a minor in Cultural Studies and Faculty Members are currently involved in planning for minors in Sustainability Studies and Middle East Studies. Pratt is an internationally recognized school of Architecture, Art, Design, Information Science, Creative Writing and Critical and Visual Studies. The Chairperson position offers an unusual opportunity for a creative academic to build bridges intellectually, pedagogically and institutionally, between the worlds of scholarship and the arts. The Institute, which draws students from diverse cultural and geographical backgrounds, is located on a 25 acre campus in the historic Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn. [b]Job Responsibilities: [/b] - Supervise and develop the Department’s curriculum and educational Programs. - Recruit, supervise, evaluate and develop Faculty. - Teach at least one course per semester. - Recruit and advise students. - Establish links to professional organizations and leading practitioners in the field. - Administer the Department’s budget. - Serve on School and Institute committees. - Assist the Dean with development and fundraising. - Carry out special projects, as assigned by the Dean. - Assume responsibility for Program assessment. - Perform all other related duties, as required. [b]Salary: [/b]Commensurate with qualifications and experience. [b]Qualifications: [/b] Applicants must have Ph.D.s in a discipline taught in the Department or another discipline of the Social Sciences, with broad interdisciplinary interests in Cultural Studies, Visual Studies and Post-Colonial Studies. Ph.D. in an area covered in Critical and Visual Studies, is preferred. Broad administrative experience and a minimum of seven years’ college level teaching experience are required. The successful candidate will have a record of scholarly accomplishment, meriting a senior Faculty rank; demonstrated excellence in teaching; and, experience with curriculum development and evidence of academic leadership.
